Caring for an Aging Parent at Home: What to Expect & How to Prepare

Updated: Aug 4

The Transition:

What it can look like moving an elderly parent into your home is a big life adjustment for everyone.

Here’s what to consider:

  • Home Safety Modifications: Install grab bars, remove tripping hazards, and ensure easy access to essentials.

  • Emotional Adjustments: Your loved one may feel like they are losing independence. Keep communication open and validate their feelings.

  • Role Reversal: It can be emotionally challenging to shift from being their child to their caregiver. Set healthy boundaries and seek support if needed.

How to create a daily routine:

Structure helps both you and your loved one:

  • Morning: Gentle stretching, breakfast, medication check.

  • Midday: Engaging activities (puzzles, light chores, or music therapy).

  • Evening: Social time, dinner, relaxation, and winding down before bed.

Keep it flexible, but consistent! Routines can reduce anxiety and confusion, especially for those with memory issues.

At-home activity ideas for a loved on that needs memory care:

If your loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s, engaging them in meaningful activities is key.

  • Music therapy: Play their favorite songs to stimulate memories.

  • Art and crafts: Helps with creativity and fine motor skills.

  • Sorting and organizing: Simple tasks like folding laundry or sorting objects by color provide purpose.

  • Reminiscence therapy: Look at old photos and share stories to spark joyful memories.

  • Gardening and sensory activities: Touching plants, smelling herbs, or feeling different textures can be calming.
